Today I made a PVC chart holder to hold my chart paper and/or anchor charts.
I bought four 5' PVC pieces, six elbow joints, four tee joints, and black spray paint made for plastic at Menards.
The whole project cost about $13 and took about an hour to complete. It's a little over 2 feet wide and almost 4 feet tall.
It's as simple as measure, mark, and cut your PVC pieces to the size necessary. Push them together with the joint pieces using all your strength (and weight). Lay out your plastic. Spray your paint. Easy peasy.
That is way cool!

Thanks! If you need any help or suggestions, let me know! :o)
DeleteIt looks so professionally made!! I love it!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I actually didn't consider that it would stick to the plastic I laid down before spray painting. Luckily, the color is so dark that it doesn't matter. You can't even tell unless you are examining it's base. :o)
DeleteI am not sure what you are planning to use for the rings, but I found these... http://www.lakeshorelearning.com/seo/p|RA415~~.jsp?cs=PDP_3_RA415 Also, do you have the dimensions that you used?

Thank you for the ring suggestion! I actually think I already have two rings, but if I don't, I was thinking of getting some rings from the shower section of Wal-mart.
DeleteDimensions: The two longer pieces are 34 1/2 inches. The four pieces used for the top and bottom widths are 25 1/2 inches. The shortest pieces to help create the base are all 6 inches. I used PVC that was 3/4 inch.
My original plan was to make the longest pieces 35 and 26 inches, but because it was easiest for us to buy the 5 foot PVC pieces from the store, I had to adjust my lengths by half an inch.
I made sure that the joint pieces did not have tread. I also did not use any glue, just pushed them together as far as they would go (there's a little notch inside).
I am worried that when I get to put my classroom together and hang my chart paper that the paint might scratch a little on that top bar, so I bought some duct tape that matches my paint that I'm going to use to protect the top bar where the rings hang.
I hope this helps. You can always email me, too, if you need to talk through some things on this project. I love the end result!
So does this replace an easel? I am a new teacher looking to purchase an easel, but they are quite expensive. I like this idea, but I am not sure how to write on the anchor charts since there is no support in the middle if I had this.
ReplyDeleteI used it to replace my easel, yes. I did find this year that the lack of support was a small problem, so one item on my to-do list this summer is to add another bar across (maybe 6-12 in higher than the one I already have) to support the paper while it's hanging so I can write on it.
DeleteIf you have anymore questions, you can email me: sarahmarianj at gmail dot com. I'm more than happy to help. Good luck in your preparations!
